Yesterday I received the yarn to make the hat for Luna’s mom. It is soft and very beautifully colored. It is also going to be a challenge knit with as it splits. I made half of the rose that goes with the hat and had to frog it and start over before I even made it pass the second row. This is going to be fun.

I have also started on Little Man’s hoodie. It is going along a lot smoother, but I forgot how long it takes and just how many rows you have to knit to make a hoodie. Since he is growing, I have to make one that is a lot bigger. I will have to remember to take pics so that I can put up my progress.

It is nice to have more than one project going. That they have different time lengths to complete will help immensely with any boredom or tediousness I might feel. Also nice is that they are different in levels of challenge, too. I can spend part of my time knitting on auto pilot and the other time fully engaged and practicing my skill. As with any of my other projects, I can’t wait to see the finished result.

The fins at the top of his head were supposed to be purple, but I didn’t have enough left. Although I think it gives him a nice contrast with them green. Luna (who he was for) loves him. I am going to have to make me one as soon as I get a break in my knitting schedule. I have several projects on my plate with a new hoodie for Little Man (he out grew the first one), a rooster hat for Dadabean (the first one I made was too small) and a cloche style hat for Luna’s Mom. Plus I want to add a block to Really Knit’s Stuff yarn bombing project and I purchased more yarn yesterday to make another pair of yoga socks with matching head wrap. Mmmmm! I love when there is no end in sight of projects to do.

One of my favorite things to make is toys. They are a relatively quick knit, anywhere from 2 hours or a week to complete, easy to carry with me on the run, and of course something to play with when I am done. A couple of years ago I purchased Amigurumi Knits by Hansi Singh. In that time I have made only a few of the patterns. I made at least 4 ants for my son when he was going through his creepy bug stage (in fact is was for the ants that I purchased the book). I used the jellyfish pattern to test yarn that my favorite shop owner was thinking of stocking. Finally, I made 3 of her Nessie, which are absolutely adorable. I like the book, but I have had a lot of trouble with her patterns. Somewhere in between her creating them and the published book things have gone screwy. I know most of my problems came from just being inexperienced enough not to know how to work around some of the problems, but other issues I am not alone. So with that in mind, I decided to tackle another project. This one is for my neighbor who fell in love with it while ogling my knitting book one day. I am pleasantly surprised at how well it is going so far and am actually moving quite a long.

I started off making the 8 arms. I used to not like working short rows, but this book has given me a lot of practice and confidence in that aspect. My favorite part of the book is her explanations on how to do certain techniques. The pictures she uses are clear and her written instructions are very easy to understand.

One of the things that I have had major problems with is inserting the chenille sticks after whipstitching them closed. With the arms there was a hole big enough to insert from the top, although it was still somewhat of hassle due to the sticks getting caught on the way down. I decided to just whipstitch the tentacles close with them already added. It made it a lot easier and I believe I am just going to do it that way from now on.

Another area that I have gotten a lot of practice with is picking up stitches. I am forever having trouble trying to figure out which stitches to pick up in the first place, then making sure I am not going all over the place. I also have a habit of dropping the stitches I have just picked up. I did fairly well this time…only dropping a few stitches.

Still working on it, as I only get a few hours here and there to knit these days. I think I am going to have to knit myself one when I am done.

Well a lot has changed since the last time we posted. Dadabean has graduated from the police academy, passed the state exam and is now working at Franklin CI. We have donated the bicycles, as we have not been able to keep up with riding and with him sleeping during the day and working all night, we really won’t be riding. Our flock has shrunk considerably, but thankfully we still have chickens, as there was a month or two where we thought we would have to get rid of them.

I debated deleting the blog and starting afresh somewhere else, but I like this blog. I will be changing things up a bit though and posting more about my knitting and the chickens with a little bit of family dashed in. With Dadabean working full time and at odd hours, there will probably be fewer posts from him. It is going to be awkward as I figure out where to go from here, but I am definitely blogging again. I have missed it and can’t wait to make a new start!
